SHILLONG, JULY 10: Assam Rifles rifleman Nazir Khan and his wife Mumtaz Begum were arrested by the police on Wednesday for smuggling of heroin worth Rs 15 lakhs from Madanrting locality.
East Khasi hills SP (city) Vivek Syiem told reporters, “We have arrested Nazir Khan, the rifleman of the Assam Riffles and his wife from Madanrting area of the city for carrying narcotic substances.”
Syiem said the couple who hails from Manipur’s Bishnupur district were picked up after the police were tipped off by sources that the duo were in possession of huge cache of powdery substances which tested positive for heroin. Khan who was posted in Assam’s Jorhat district as a rifleman in the Assam Riffles was on leave and visiting his wife Mumtaz Begum in Shillong, Syiem said.
Acting on a tip off, the couple was detained by the police and found two cans containing yellow powdery substance from their possession. Police immediately seize powdery substance which later tested positive for heroin.
The couple later led the special police team to their residence where 101 grams of the heroin packed in four packets and small tin containers were seized.
Police have arrested both and are interrogation to find out the source from where they got the heroin and if they have business partners and their modus operandi in Shillong.
The couple has been remanded to five days police custody by a local court.- By Our Reporter
