Shillong, August 6: The Water Resources department has resubmitted the Detail Project Report (DPR) for construction of the embankment and channel improvement along the Wahumkhrah and Umshypri rivers to prevent occurrence of flash flood along these rivers.
The fresh DPR projected cost is around Rs 41. 70 crore which was submitted the deputy secretary of department on July 24. The cost for construction of embankment and channel improvement was projected at Rs. 46.45 crore.
The first DPR submitted by the Water Resources department was returned by the Brahmaputra Board with some observations. It had directed the Chief Engineer of Water Resources to rework the DPR and resubmit.
According to Water department sources, construction of 6.4 kilometer of embankment from Nongmynsong to Umkaliar RTC bridge, Mawlai will be undertaken. Some portion along the Umsyphri river will also be taken up on priority basis.
Beside construction of embankment, the department is also considering channel improvement- cleaning up of the river bed- and ponding- drain out. An officer of the Water Resources department said, “Wherever there is ponding, the department will drain it out so that it doesn’t become a hazard to the people living in those areas.”
People living along the Wahumkhrah literally lives in perennial fear of the flash flood during the monsoon as the river overflow the bank and water enters the houses. –By Tilak Rai
