SHILLONG, APR 16: Umsaw village dorbar in West Khasi Hills indirectly ostracized a sixty-four year old man on the accusing him of ‘practicing witchcraft’ and later forced him to write that he had left the village on his own.
Umsaw dorbar shnong allegedly threatened that he did not leave the village boiling water will be poured on him.
Maksing Wahlang, Umsaw village resident under Myriaw Syiemship, was forced to submit a written letter before the dorbar shnong that he wanted to leave the village.
Wahlang told reporters on Thursday, “I was summoned by the dorbar shnong on October 24, 2012 and subsequently was made to write a statement to the dorbar that I wanted to leave the village.”
Wahlang said he had agreed to leave the village because the dorbar shnong threatened to pour hot water if he disagreed with the decision. He said, “Due to fear, I had no choice but decided to leave the village on October 30, 2012.”
Besides indirectly ostracizing him, the dorbar shnong also imposed a fine of Rs 20, 000 alleging that Wahlang had taken much of the dorbar’s time in resolving the issue of alleged witchcraft.
“I had to pay the fine for no fault of mine and on top of the allegation against me was not true,” Wahlang said. The village dorbar also denied him the right to visit his children and his family.
“The dorbar has also warned me of punishment if anyone is found having work relation with me”, Wahlang added. A father of nine children, he sought the intervention of the additional subordinate District Court into the matter.
Wahlang informed that acting on his petition, the district court has directed the dorbar shnong of Umsaw village to refund the fine of Rs 20, 000 imposed on him but the Umsaw sordar P Lyngkhoi moved the case to the district council and the case is still pending.- By Our Reporter
