SHILLONG, JAN 23: The Lawbyrtun dorbar and the Hynniewtrep Youth Council-Mawthadraishan Circle (HYC-MC) are at loggerhead with their legislator HB Nongsiej over the shifting of the residential school from Lawbyrtun to Mawlangren village on the suggestion of the latter.

The Lawbyrtun village under Mawthadraishan block is one among the 20 blocks in the state selected by the state government for the construction of residential schools. However Nongsiej threw cold water as he suggested to the state government to shift the school to Mawlangren village saying that Lawbyrtun doesn’t have good road and other infrastructure.

This suggestion has infuriated the Lawbyrtun dorbar and the HYC-MC.

HYC-MC president Marcus R Myrthong told newsmen during a media conference on Friday, “We strongly opposed the move of the legislator HB Nongsiej to shift the project from Lawbyrtun to Mawlangren village within the same constituency of Mawthadraishan.”

Myrthong informed that survey work for setting up the residential school has already been carried in the village and the education department had floated tender from August 4 to 14 last year.

Surprisingly, Myrthong said the tender was later cancelled by the government.

Myrthong informed that when it was inquired why tender was suddenly cancelled they found that their local MLA had requested the department to cancel the project from Lawbyrtun and suggested shifting to Mawlangren village as he said the village lag good road, infrastructure and other development.

The state government had sanctioned Rs 2.44 crore for the construction of the residential school at a 20 acre land donated free by Lawbyrtun village.

Enraged with the legislator, Myrthong questioned him and said if he felt that Lawbyrtun is lagging in term of development then what is stopping him from addressing this issue.”Why is he (MLA) opposing to the development of the village,” he questioned.

Myrthong said the council demand the legislator respects the decision of the state government which had identified Lawbyrtun village as the location for setting up of the school.

Saying the legislator is misleading the government, Lawbyrtun headman Phailander L Nonglait said the village is having a black top road besides two upper primary schools. He said the village has around 329 households with a population of 1500 and all have welcomed the project which is a blessing for the village and the area as a whole.

The HYC and the village dorbar urged the state government to speed up the finalization of the project so that the construction work can start at the earliest. Myrthong said they urged the neighbouring villages under the constituency to also respect the decision of the government. – By Our Reporter
