SHILLONG, MAR 6: The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) on Sunday accused the state police of provoking the outfit by targeting family members of its cadres and also to bring an end to the proposed peace process.
“Isn’t it just ridiculous at a time when we are on the way to give up arms movement, the police department is trying to poison us and our determination by directly trying to provoke us, so that we retaliate and bring an end to the ongoing peace process,” HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said in a statement issued on Sunday.
The outfit was reacting to the recent arrest of the sister of one of its cadre by the police, who had alleged that she was an over ground worker of the HNLC.
“The state police department is hell bent on targeting family members of the HNLC. This becomes clear after the arrest of W Diengdoh, the sister of Assistant Defense Secretary of the HNLC,” Nongtraw said.
Stating that every family member of the HNLC cadres has a right to communicate with them, he however said, “But the police had always harassed innocent family members of the HNLC for just communicating with one’s brother as it does make her an overground worker. In that case literally speaking all family members of the HNLC are overground workers.”
He also alleged that in the past, many ngo leaders were also arrested on maintaining links with the outfit.
Lambasting the police for failing to act against politico-militant nexus, Nongtraw said, “The police don’t dare to arrest politicians from Garo hills having links with militant outfits.”
Referring to recent statements made by the police department regarding peace talks, he said that it has clearly shows that they are not at all concerned about peace.
The HNLC leader further claimed that the outfit has stopped recruitments which also claimed by the BSF. “Instead of that we have shifted our base camps from Bangladesh to other countries,” Nongtraw said.
He also said that the police is compelling them to use IEDs against them. The same police department claims that we are less in numbers and again they contradict their statements by saying that we are inducting new recruits.
“We think it is time for us to really show our firepower strength. Once we start detonating our IED, then the police shall be responsible,” he warned. –By Our Reporter
