SHILLONG, OCT 26: Traditional Jaintia chiefs have sought the intervention of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) into the alleged mass killing of fishes through the illegal permission granted by the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council. The Dorbar Ki Daloi Ka Ri Jaintia (DKDKRJ) has filed a petition before the chairperson of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and also Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Changes for their necessary actions.
In the petition, DKDKRJ secretary Manbha Kyndoh said, “Kindly take suo- moto cognizance of this illegal activity and arrest all the concerned people who are responsible for appointing and authorizing such unscrupulous agents to kill wild animals.”
He alleged that the JHADC executive committee has illegally granted permission and license for mass killing of wild and aquatic animals and fishes in various water bodies of Jaintia hills.
The Dalois, who claimed to be guardian of environment, forests and water bodies, in the petition have also submitted pictures taken on October 25 from one of the rivers where several metric tons of acquatic wild animals were killed by the authorized agents of the JHADC EC.
“The matter is a serious criminal offence and it goes against the spirit of Protection of wildlife and Animal Act,” Kyndoh stated in the petition.-By Our Reporter
