SHILLONG, MAR 6: UDP leader Teinwell Dkhar and NPP leader Pynshngainlang N Syiem are all set to be elected unopposed as the new chief executive member and chairman of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), elections of which will be held on Thursday.
Dkhar is the only member who has filed his nomination for the CEM post and Syiem for the post of the Chairman, KHADC legislative secretary M Kharkrang told reporters here on Wednesday.
Kharkrang informed that the elections to the two top posts will be held tomorrow in which the timing for the Chairman’s post has been fixed at 11 am while for the CEM’s post at 2 pm.
With United Democratic Alliance (UDA) enjoying the support of 19 members, the opposition Congress with only 10 members has decided not to contest the elections to the two important posts citing that they do not have the numbers.
The UDA is formed by the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) and People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) which comprises of the United Democratic Party (7) and Hill State People’s Democratic (2), National People’s Party (7), People’s Democratic Front (1) and two Independents – Lambor Malngiang and Latiplang Kharkongor.
Dkhar, who was re-elected as MDC of Shella for the fourth time, was the former chairman, while Syiem was the former chief executive member of the Council.
Syiem got re-elected from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkrah, a constituency he contested for the first time by defeating PDF leader James Ban Basaiawmoit in the just concluded district council elections.
“We are sure of winning both the posts because the opposition has decided not to contest the elections,” Syiem said.
Asked, he said though there will be a meeting between the members of the UDA but it will be the prerogative of the new CEM to propose the names of the executive members.
