Distribution, delivery problems leading to coin shortage

Shillong, August 24: RBI deputy governor KC Chakrabarty said
“distribution” and “delivery” are the contributory factors leading to shortages of coins and currency notes in the country.

Speaking to reporters, Chakrabarty said, “We have identified that distribution is an issue in this respect even as the last mile delivery is another issue,”

With six lakhs villages in the country, distribution of coins and notes is not easy and it depends on the network available as even
banks do not have such a network, Chakrabarty said.
Citing other reasons for the shortage of coins, Chakrabarty said that the other reasons is that people holds back the coins and informed that on Thursday he got a call from a lady who was asking for his help for exchange of the huge 25 paise coins she had accumulated bit missed the exchange last date.

Chakrabarty admitted that the are distribution and last mile delivery
issue for coins and notes to reach the people, but what is necessary
is that people should realize that we (RBI) are solving the issue in a
much better and faster way. –By Our Reporter
