SHILLONG, SEPT 3: The Meghalaya government appealed to the citizens of Garo hills to denounce the ‘unwarranted’ dawn-to-dusk bandh called by the ANVC(B) even as it assured that security to the people will not be compromised.
Meghalaya’s political department under secretary said in a statement on Wednesday, “Members of the public and government employees in particular are requested not to pay any heed to this unreasonable call and to come out as they would on any normal day and carry on their daily activities without any fear or apprehension of reprisals.”
The statement came a day after the ANVC(B) called for a 12-hour bandh in five districts of Garo hills on Thursday demanding immediate centre’s intervention to restore peace in the troubled region.
The government also reiterated its firm commitment to maintain law and order at all costs and to ensure that the security of the citizens is not compromised in any way.
“The government reiterates its commitment to deal with such calls with a firm hand in keeping with its constitutional obligation to ensure peace and a secure environment to all the citizens of the state,” the statement said.
The government also informed that it has taken serious note of the situation in the Garo hills wherein a meeting with all MLAs of Garo hills was convened to work out effective steps to bring back normalcy in the militant infested areas of the region.- By Our Reporter
