Deficit teachers serve 2-week ultimatum to MDA govt over pay revision

SHILLONG, MAY 21: Meghalaya’s deficit school teachers today served a two-week deadline to the state government demanding implementation of the Fifth Pay Commission’s recommendations by extending the new pay revision to them, failing which they would be compelled to resort to agitations.

The decision was taken jointly by the teachers under the banner of the Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers’ Association (KJDSTA) and Garo Hills Deficit School Teachers’ and Employees’ Association (GHDSTEA) after the state government failed to take any call in its Cabinet sitting held recently.

Speaking to reporters here on Monday, KJDSTA chief ED Nongsiang said, “We have decided to give a two-week ultimatum to the government to also extend the new pay revision and pension scheme to the deficit teachers as per the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission.”

Nongsiang also said that teachers will immediately start their agitations if the state government fails to pay heed to demand within June 3.

Asked, the KJDSTA president said that the chief minister Conrad K Sangma during a meeting with the delegation of the two associations on April 27 had assured that his government would take a call on the matter within a period of 10 days.

“We had high hopes that the new pay scale will be extended to us but even after ten days, the state Cabinet (which held its sitting twice this month) could not take any decision on this regard. It seems that the government wanted to keep the matter pending,” he added.

Earlier after a cabinet meeting held on May 8, Conrad informed that the issue related to the new pay revision for teachers was supposed to be in the agenda but the finance department has asked the education department to complete the details with regards to the financial implication.

However, Nongsiang said that almost all the schools in the different districts have submitted their proposals on the financial implication related to the new pay scale for the teachers and now the matter is with the education department.

According to him, the new pay revision would benefit a total of 6,686 teachers teaching in the primary, upper primary, secondary and higher secondary deficit schools in the state.

Reacting to a query, the association president informed that a Joint Action Committee of the two bodies has been formed to chalk out the agitational programmes which would begin from June 4.
