SHILLONG, MAR 15: The United Democratic Party (UDP) today asked the state government to come up with a comprehensive plan to address traffic congestion in Meghalaya.
“The state government has to take a serious note and come up with a comprehensive plan to address traffic congestion,” UDP legislator Jemino Mawthoh said in the Assembly.
Earlier, home minister HDR Lyngdoh while highlighting on the various steps taken by the government to decongest traffic claimed that the steps have helped in easing congestion.
However, Mawthoh pointed out that such steps were just piece meal response but the fact remains that traffic congestion has become a “nightmare” for citizens.
At the same time, he expressed concern over the failure of the government to take bold steps to regulate traffic despite having plans in the past to construct fly overs, widening of roads, terminal points and others.
He said there was also a need to constitute a special committee involving various departments for better coordination to tackle traffic congestion.
In his reply, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma claimed that there is already a comprehensive mechanism in place and a number of integrated actions have already been resorted.
Stating that all departments concerned are on the job, he said that measures such as identifying areas which are choking the traffic, improving of alignment and widening of roads besides construction of Shillong Bye Pass and others have been taken to ensure Shillong is insulated from the problem of traffic congestion.
