SHILLONG, JUNE 24: The Achik National Volunteers’ Council (ANVC-B) on Wednesday said that the Garos must arrive at a general consensus whether to be with KHADC or with GHADC following KHADC MDC Adelbert Nongrum’s statement on debarring Garo from Khasi hills to contest and vote in upcoming MDC elections 2014.
Quoting Nongrum who had said that “If all Garos are to be under Garo Administration than Garos must consider his suggestion and GHADC must expand its jurisdiction to all Garo areas as Garos cannot be deprived of their rights to vote and contest in the KHADC election in their own State”.
“Garos must take this as a wake-up call and arrive at general consensus whether to be with KHADC or with GHADC,” ANVC B said in a statement issued on Monday.
The ANVC(B) said, “Such move to debar will be unfair and unjustified against Garos of Khasi Hills. Most borders of Khasi Hills are dominated by Garos and the population is considerably big therefore such a move may to debar Garos from Khasi hills to take parts in the KHADC election might have repercussion.”
ANVC(B) further questioned that if KHADC is only for the Khasis then how come Garo populace falls KHADC area in the first place? Some of these areas have no Khasi population at all and are still under Nokma system.
Stating that the outfit has nothing against Khasis, the ANVC ( B) said, “But as this issue was raised by our brethrens our priority lies with our people and the security of their existence.” –By Our Reporter
