SHILLONG, DEC 8: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today said the decision to declare December 28 and 29 as working days is to complete the implementation of the new revise pay structure for government employees of the state.
“This whole exercise is a gigantic task. Every drawing and disbursal officers in all departments have to complete this exercise (pay fixation and works associated) otherwise all this that we have put on will be futile,” Sangma told reporters here.
He said that some of the departments are working on holidays also even now including Saturdays and Sundays particularly the department of Finance.
Earlier, the opposition National People’s Party (NPP) has opposed the decision of the government to declare the two days as working days and also demanded the same to be revoked in view that is a festive season.
Asked, Sangma however said that the two days were never in the list of holidays but the government has been very generous in declaring them as holidays in the preceding years.
“The government has been very considerate in allowing aggregation of this period as holidays which are compensated by employees on Saturdays which otherwise are not working days,” he said.
Reiterating that the present decision is based on the exigency of work, Sangma said that the government is just informing everybody in advance to ensure the government employees gets what is due to them on time.
“Because by the time we step into January, all officers will be busy for training even now they are undergoing training for election related works. So there will be complete dislocation of work so everyday becomes important for us so we are utilizing the time available,” he added.
Whether the government will declared these days as holidays next year, the chief minister said that when the government has been generous in the previous years then why it can’t be generous in the future.
