Deborah sets deadline for untrained teachers

SHILLONG, SEPT 5: State Minister for School Education and Literacy Deborah C Marak today asked the teachers to be “professionals” by completing the training programmes within March 2019, the deadline set by the Centre.

“Let us take it (teaching) as a serious profession which then only can we build strong pillars and shape the future of our children,” Marak said while addressing at the state level teachers’ day function at U Soso Tham Auditorium held here on Tuesday.

Stating that the state government along with the Government of India is on a mission for a 100 per cent reduction of the backlog of untrained teachers, she said, “It is a commitment that we have to implement and achieve this target by March 31, 2019.”

“It is high time we need trained teachers and professionalism has to come to ensure quality education which can bring the state at par with the rest of the country,” she said.

The state of Meghalaya as per official sources is having around 20,000 untrained teachers. Of these, over 10, 000 have applied admission for undergoing training in diploma in elementary education for the current year.

At present, the state has tied up with the National Institute of Open Schooling for imparting training to untrained teachers.

The Centre has recently directed the state governments to ensure all in-service untrained teachers acquire minimum qualification mandated under the RTE Act, 2009 by March31, 2019, failing which their services will be terminated.

In a letter, the MHRD has initiated the State Government that any elementary schools teachers teaching in Government/Govt-Aided/ Private Schools who does not have the requisite minimum professional qualification mandated under the RTE Act, 2009, have to complete the professional qualification Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) within March 31, 2019.

“Failing which their service will be terminated with effect from April 1,2019,” it stated.

The minister further informed that there are also several other programme under the state government to enhance teacher’s improvement at all level through intensive in service teachers’ training programme under the Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan.

She also said that institutes of national importance such as IIT Guwahati, NIT Shillong, NEHU, EFLU, NERIE, DERT, DIET and other NGOs such as Jodo Gyan, IIT Alumni and other NGOs are on the pipeline to support and introduce the teachers to a new range of teaching learning process in all core subjects.

“Our priorities are to give our children the best environment for their safe and prospective learning process. To achieve this goal we need to encourage and give our teachers a window of opportunity to improve their skills and methods of teaching,” Marak said.

In order to motivate teachers, she said that the state government from time to time enhanced the salary of teachers.

“The state government is well aware of the importance of teaching communities towards its contribution to economic and social well-being of the state, therefore improving their lifestyle and to facilitate their professional improvement is the key commitment,” she added.
