DC prohibits carry cash

SHILLONG, NOV 20: With the bye-elections to the KHADC slated for December 13 the East Khasi hills deputy commissioner, who is also the returning officer has prohibited people from carrying money above Rs 50, 000 in the three constituencies of the district to ensure free and fair bye-elections. The order was issued following information that some persons are likely to carry large amount of hard cash to bribe the voters for casting their vote in favour of a particular candidate.

“Any person or group of persons are prohibited from carrying money above Rs 50, 000 in the three district council constituencies – Nongkrem, Laban-Mawprem and Nongspung-Sohiong,” DC PS Dkhar said in his order.

He said such action, if allowed, would affect the conduct of free and fair bye-election to the KHADC and is likely to cause altercations between members of the public leading to law and order problem, breach of peace and tranquility ultimately resulting to loss of life and property.

The government had directed to check bribery of voters during the conduct of any elections and ensure the voters exercise the franchise freely and fairly without fear or inducement.
