SHILLONG, JAN 9: Denied a ticket, David Nongrum, the son of Assembly speaker Charles Pyngrope, on Wednesday resigned from the Congress party in a huff and instead announced his decision to contest the Assembly elections from the 13-Mawryngkneng constituency as an Independent.
Nongrum was hoping to get the party ticket from the constituency, which his father had won for two consecutive terms since 2003. The Congress, however, decided to field Pynehborlang Mukhim from the seat, while giving the 21-Nongthymmai ticket to Nongrum’s father.
Nongrum, of course, was widely expected to get the ticket for Mawryngkneng, especially since the Mawryngkneng Black Congress Committee had recommended his name as the suitable candidate from the seat. “I have decided to run as an independent candidate without meaning any disrespect to others. I shall thus continue to serve my people and help them enjoy better opportunities,” he said.
Addressing community leaders of his constituency at Umpling, Nongrum, who is a businessman, said and his father both were very committed workers of the Congress, and their family has created a legacy of sorts in the constituency due to their work for the people. “The recent decision by the Congress party to approve the nomination of another candidate for 13-Mawryngkneng Constituency has not diminished my passion for, and my commitment to, the people. My people come first,” he said. (By Our Reporter)
