Cyclone Remal: 1dies, 5 injured in Meghalaya

One person died while five injured in the state due to rain related incidents during the last twenty-four hours.

Over 233 houses were damaged in 79 villages affecting more than 1222 population besides damages to 10 infrastructures due to severe cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ in the last three days from May 26 to May 28, Secretary in-charge Revenue & Disaster Management Matsiewdor War Nongbri on Tuesday.

She informed that a 25 year old man died and a house was damaged after a wall collapsed at Sutnga Weilong under Wapung C&RD Block in East Jaintia Hills District.

Four people were also injured when a landslide occurred at Mawkynroh Bypass under Mawlai C&RD Block. All injured people who were shifted to NEIGRIHMS hospital for treatment, she said.

A wall also collapsed at Bivar Road and people were trapped inside. As a result one person got injured and was shifted to the hospital.

Landslides were reported from different districts of the state. There was also a massive landslide at Sonapyrdi tunnel and NHAI is on site for clearance.
