SHILLONG, JULY 8: Indefinite curfew along the Assam- South West Garo hills district of Meghalaya continues and the night curfew starting from 10 pm to 5 am everyday is still being imposed in West Garo hills district. The situation in South West Garo hills is reportedly tense but free from any incidents.
South West Garo hills SP R Muthu informed told this website no untoward incidents in the district or in Monabari area close to the famous Mir Jumla’s tomb, where crowds had gathered on Saturday leading to blank firing by Meghalaya police, have been reported.
The mob had pelted stones on the convoy of the DC South West Ram Singh on Saturday.
On Sunday two bodies were fished out from a pond on the Assam side of the border and inevitably there has been tension in the area. The discovery to the two bodies from the Assam side might not have any connection with the tension in Garo hills.
The two youths have been buried on Monday and security has been enhanced to ensure that the situation remains normal in the Meghalaya side bordering Assam.
According to South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh the deceased was the son of a gram panchayat in the nearby villages of Assam. The cause of the death is not known but trouble mongers are trying to give a communal colour and add to the already tense situation in Garo hills.
The Garo hills districts police and the district administration have appealed to the people not to be carried away boy rumours and ensure that peace prevails in the region. –By Our Reporter
