SHILLONG, JULY 25: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma informed that his Assam counterpart Tarun Gogoi has decided that the chief secretaries of both the state should discuss over Meghalaya’s claim of the disputed lands along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
Meghalaya government had submitted its claims over some of the disputed lands supported by documents. Assam government had sought time to study Meghalaya’s claim.
Sangma told reporters on Thursday he had spoken to Gogoi on Friday last and accordingly the chief secretaries of both the states have been directed to discuss the issue.
Sangma said, “I have told my secretary to get in touch with counterpart and sit for the meeting.”
The border dispute between the two neighbouring states have led to many rifts at the border and the latest was when Assam police allegedly demolished the kitchen shed of a lower primary school at Sabuda recently.
Asserting that dispute has to be resolved through negotiation, Sangma felt both the states must ensure that there should not be an atmosphere of mistrust. He said, “We must take into consideration the general wellbeing of people residing along the inter-state border.”
Sangma also felt that the disputed areas must not be neglected by both the states but must allow development activities to continue.
Answering to a query on whether Meghalaya government is is for a give and take policy , Sangma said that the government will have to see what is mutually acceptable to the people of the state.- By Our Reporter
