Crucial govt-ngos ILP meet

SHILLONG, APR 28: Three months after their last meeting, the state government and the pro –ILP ngos will be meeting on Tuesday to further discuss the issue of influx and illegal immigration into the state and the urgent need to implement the ILP.

KSU president Daniel Khyriem said that the group will attend the meeting with a positive mindset and hope that whatever emerges from tomorrow’s meeting will be for the benefit of the people.

Khyriem also informed that the pro-ILP ngos will also make public the document they have prepared on the issues of influx and illegal immigration. The document will be submitted to the government during Tuesday’s meeting.

The state government will be represented by chief minister Mukul Sangma and his team The meeting is slated to begin from 11:00 am onwards.

The last meeting between the state government and the thirteen pro-ILP ngos on the ILP issue was held on January 15.

The pro-ILP groups includes the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi, Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP), Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (HNYF), All Jaiñtia Youth Welfare Organisation (AJYWO), Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE), A’chik Youth Welfare Organisation (AYWO), Khasi Women Welfare and Development Association (KWWADA) and others.

The ngos have been demanding implementation of the ILP to check influx and illegal immigration into the state since 2012.  But the state government has put its foot down to implementing the IL and instead said that other mechanism should be explored to check influx into the state.

The state witnessed bout of protests last year leading to shutdowns,  road blockades and office picketing by the ngos who asserted “No, ILP, No Rest.” The police made several arrests during the prolong agitations.- By Our Reporter
