SHILLONG, FEB 5: Fourteen years old Modonna Lyngdoh danced her way to victory as she swept the coveted finals of the North East Creation Dance Championship 2013 held in Guwahati recently.
A village belle of Laskein in West Jaintia hills, Lyngdoh overcame many odds on her way to the finals as she went pass three thousand dancers from different parts of the north east to emerge as the winner of the dance competition.
A student of class VII of St Francis English School at Mawkyndeng, West Jaintia Hills Lyngdoh, however, was fortunate to be taken under the wing of Kit Thabah, a Dance India Dance participant, who trained her to fine-tune dancing skills and emerge as the top most dancers among the three thousand participants.
It was no small feat for this village belle who kept up her spirit even after having failed to make to India’s topmost reality show Dance India Dance (DID) by taking part in North East’s very own top dance competition. The win will of course galvanise her to take another shot at the DID competition in future.
Though happy at winning the dance championship in Guwahati, Lyngdoh, however, is miffed with both the state government and the local legislator for refusing to provide financial assistance to her during the competition. She told a media conference on Tuesday, “We had asked for financial support from the government and local MLA, but nothing materialized.”
Now that she has won, Lyngdoh has a piece of advice to the government on the need to promote dance at par with singing as she puts it, “Like singing, dancing also should be given importance.”- By Our Reporter
