SHILLONG, MAR 1: The countdown has started to the much-awaited poll result in the two autonomous district councils of Khasi and Jaintia Hills region which will decide the fate of as many as 232 candidates.
Counting of votes for the 29 seats of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and 29 seats of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) would be held tomorrow amid tight security.
“The counting will start at 8am sharp in the notified centres which include three civil sub-divisions,” Commissioner & Secretary of District Council Affairs (DCA) Tining Dkhar said.
The counting centres for the KHADC will be held mainly in the NSCA stadium while for West Jaintia Hills and East Jaintia Hills, counting will be held at the DC’s office, Jowai and Jaintia Eastern College, Khliehriat respectively, he said.
Elections were held on February 27.
The total 232 candidates also include two MLAs and eight females.
The KHADC has recorded an overall turnout of 76.67 per cent and 89.22 per cent in JHADC.
Among the 29 constituencies in the KHADC, the lowest turnout was recorded in Nongthymmai constituency just 48.50 per cent while Nongshken constituency recorded the highest at 88.22 per cent.
In constituencies in JHADC, the turnout of voters has crossed 80 per cent in all constituencies with Jowai-North recorded the lowest at 81.12 per cent and the highest was 96.41 per cent in Tuber constituency.
In the 2014 elections, the KHADC recorded a turnout of 78 per cent and 92 per cent in JHADC.
The DCA senior official had also informed that security arrangements are being by the respective deputy commissioners and superintendents of police for the counting.
Meanwhile, the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) has expressed confidence that the MDA will form the government in the two tribal district councils. On the other hand, the opposition Congress had predicted a hung verdict but says it would definitely reach the half way mark.
