TURA, APR 3: Two cops from Meghalaya’s West Garo hills were suspended on molestation and assault charges. The police official identified as David Marak was suspended for allegedly molesting a minor at the Jengjal outpost. While officer in-charge of Rongram police outpost A Bamon was suspended for assaulting a Meghalaya transport cooperation (MTC) driver at Goeragre, in the outskirt of Tura last week.
David was suspended after the victim filed an FIR at Tura police station last night, accompanied by his parents. A driver, who was David’s victim, had also filed an FIR against him (cop) yesterday.
David’s victim stated in the FIR at Tura police station that on April 4, the driver and the minor, who were travelling together in a motorbike, were stopped by the cop at about 7:30 pm at Waribokgre village and was taken to Jengjal outpost.
The accused cop had blamed the driver to be a cadre of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and alleged that he was a pimp.
“I was abused and called a pimp before they started beating me up. I was hit on my arms and legs and had never faced something like this in my life. I panicked and as soon as I was able to get away I ran. All the policemen were in an inebriated state. I come from a poor family and was scared, not knowing whom to approach,” said the driver.
The matter came to light on March 31, after the family of the victim’s approached civil organisations.
According to the FIR, the minor girl was kept at the outpost in Jengjal till late in the night and was molested by the cop (David Marak). “I was taken to the outpost and kept there till late at night. There was power cut at the outpost. The officer was drunk and made advances and molested me. They dropped me home”, said the minor victim.
West Garo hills SP Mukesh Singh on Sunday confirmed the suspension of the cops. “We are investigating the matter”, he said. Earlier, this week A. Bamon of Rongram outpost was suspended for assaulting an MTC bus driver.- From Our Correspondent
