‘Continue secondary section’

SHILLONG, JUNE 8: The Captain Williamson Memorial Government College Students’ Union (CWMGCSU)in Baghmara opposed the decision to discontinue the higher secondary section in the college from this year.

“The South Garo Hills district is being dragged one more step backward towards under development by ending up the higher secondary section from our college meanwhile the education scenario in the district needs to be uplifted,” CWMGCSU general secretary Tarpin A Sangma said in a statement on Monday.

The CWMGCSU also expressed its support to the Achik Students’ Welfare Association (ASWA), who has initiated the demand for continuation of higher secondary section in the college and also Williamnagar Government College.

Stating that such actions would result in students’ dropouts, he said, “The government, the Education Department and the College authority must take the responsibility for all the negative consequences.”

Condemning the excuse given the college authority that decision was taken due to lack of infrastructure, he said, “We have made all the demands including the upgrading of the college building but the government did not consider even a single demand till today for which we feel the state government must be ashamed of their own inability to meet our demands.”

Informing that the notice for the introduction of semester system in the degree section by the NEHU was given since years back, he said, the government should have been careful about the future and made all the required preparations.

According to him, the Capt. Williamson Memorial Govt. College, Baghmara is one the premier institutions and the only Government College available for pursuing higher studies in the South Garo Hills area.

The CWMGCSU has threatens to team up with ASWA and take future course of action if the demands for the immediate continuation of higher secondary section in the college and the Williamnagar Government College are not met early.- By Our Reporter
