SHILLONG, JUL 8: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Wednesday said the Meghalaya government had taken up concerns over FCRA with the Centre, with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma leading a delegation of church elders to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Addressing the media, Dhar said the appointment was secured by the Chief Minister to allow representatives of the Christian community to directly apprise the Union Home Minister of the issues they are facing.

“The Union Home Minister gave time to our Chief Minister. Under his leadership, he took all the church elders along and they met Amit Shah ji to place their request regarding FCRA-related matters,” Dhar stated.

He underlined that protecting the interests of the Christian community remains a priority for the state government.

“Under Conrad Sangma’s leadership, we have always stood for the protection of our Christian community, both in Meghalaya and across the country. People have faith in our Chief Minister and we are proud of that,” he said.

Dhar noted that the government had responded to representations made by church leaders in the state.

“Whenever our people face such issues related to churches and the Christian community, we are there to listen and to act. The Chief Minister met the elders, took them to Delhi, and they had the opportunity to meet the Union Home Minister. We have seen how the CM explained everything to him,” Dhar added.

He also thanked the Centre for engaging with the delegation.“I am very happy and I thank the Government of India for listening to our request. The Chief Minister personally took the delegation to meet the Home Minister at his level,” Dhar said.
