SHILLONG, FEB 21: Congress president Rahul Gandhi today said the Congress party will defeat the BJP which is pushing poison into the society even as he accused the Prime Minister Narendra Modi of being an “instrument” of corruption.
Rahul, who wrapped up his two-day campaign with a road show in the state capital here on Wednesday to drum up support for the Congress party and its candidates, also addressed a large crowd gathered at Khyndailad area before leaving for New Delhi.
The Congress which is ruling in the state is fielding candidates in all the sixty seats for the February 27 Assembly polls.
“The Congress party is the spirit of freedom and it is the voice of millions and millions of people of this country and that is what we are defending here in Meghalaya because it doesn’t matter how strong they (BJP) are, we will defeat them,” Rahul said.
He also termed the BJP’s alleged attempt to woo voters by offering crore of rupees to the churches in the state as “disgusting”.
“They (BJP) think that they can come here and they can buy the church, the religion and God. This is the level of arrogance that I find I don’t like to use strong words but I have no other word to use except the word disgusting that is what it is. It is disgusting,” he said.
“Just because they think that they can buy some MLAs or they can form the government in Goa or in Manipur by buying a couple of MLAs, may be they can even buy a couple of Congress MLAs in Meghalaya but they the arrogance to believe that they can actually buy the church can you imagine that.”
Stating that his approach is Meghalaya is India then India is also Meghalaya, Rahul said the Congress wants that the idea of the people of Meghalaya to be heard not only in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha but in every corner of India.
“This is because we believe it is with your idea and million of ideas like yours that the country can move forward. We believe every single person regardless of what he is, we feel all of you have something to offer this country,” he said.
He however said but the Congress’s opponent – the BJP feels that there is a certain idea in India that should rule over all other ideas.
“And they believe that the central idea should dominate all other ideas, cultures, langauges, religions and this is really our central fight with them,” he added
Pointing out to the incidents where churches are being burnt, people are being beaten up in Madhya Pradesh, Rahul said, “You can see that is the atmosphere of fear they are promoting and their entire idea is always to divide, to oppress and to be nasty.”
He also said that the prime minister can spent 1 hour 45 minutes explaining to little children how to pass exams, but he cannot spend 5 minutes condemning when churches in Madhya Pradesh are burnt, when a poor dalit or a Muslim man is butchered.
Accusing the prime minister for attempting to poison one Indian against another person, he said, “Everything (for them) is how can we pushed poison into the society. Why, it is because they want to rule the country at any cost.”
The Congress president further questioned as to where the money that the BJP is spending in their campaigns come from and said that he is sure that it certainly isn’t coming happily from the people.
“You can see Narendra Modi talks of corruptions day in and day out but he doesn’t answer the question where does all the money that the BJP spends in their campaigns come from,” he said.
Also accusing the prime minister of being an “instrument of corruption”, Rahul said, “So frankly there is no question that Modi is even going to comment about Nirav. 1 hour 45 minutes to teach children how to take exams but he cannot spend 5 minutes explaining that Nirav Modi takes 22,000 crore of your money and runs away to England.”
“These scams are coming up and this what the Congress has been saying for a very long time that Modi is not actually against corruption as he is corruption and he is the instrument of corruption,” he said.
Slamming the BJP-led government on demonetisation, he said, “While people of India are standing in line infront of banks and Modi was saying we are fighting corruption, all the people with black money and crooks change the black money to white.”
Meanwhile, the Congress chief also appealed to the people of Meghalaya to send a clear message that the BJP cannot buy them or take away their ideas or way of thinking, language and music.
“You have to give these people a message not only in Meghalaya but the rest of the country that we will sing any song we want, we will play any instrument we want and we will do whatever we want we are respectable people and this is our heritage this is our culture,” he added.
