SHILLONG, SEPT 22: The ruling Congress on Thursday announced the list of candidates who will be contesting the upcoming bye-elections to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council slated on December.
The list of candidates was approved by the Pradesh Election Committee (PEC) of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Party (MPCC) in its meeting held at the official residence of its president DD Lapang on Thursday.
“After prolonged deliberations, the list of candidates for the bye-elections to the seven vacant seats in the KHADC and JHADC were unanimously approved,” MPCC general secretary in-charge Election Polycarp K. Marak said.
Former JHADC chief executive member (CEM) Lamdibok Sumer will be contesting from War East constituency, which was lying vacant following the resignation of Parliamentary Secretary Stephanson Mukhim.
The party also fielded Lamborsing Nongrum to contest against UDP official candidate and former KHADC CEM Hispreaching Son Shylla from Nongkrem constituency.
While Nathaneil Osbert Rymmai, the son of Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh, will be contesting from Nongspung-Sohiong constituency, Lambok Nongrang from Mairang, Kimfa Marbaniang from Myriaw Rambrai, Ioanis Lyngdoh from Pariong and Moon Lyngdoh from Laban Mawprem.
The bye-election was necessitated after out of eight, seven MLAs have resigned from the post of MDCs of the KHADC and JHADC following the passing of the Prevention of Disqualification (Members of Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya) (Amendment) Act, 2015, which seeks to end holding of dual posts by the MLAs, last year.-By Our Reporter
