Shillong, Nov 24: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) working president and former deputy chief minister Deborah Marak was gheroed by heavily armed A’chik National Volunteers Council (ANVC) –B faction militants Saturday after they fired in the air during a prize distribution ceremony of the football final at Rongbinggre .
According to the East Garo hills deputy commissioner Vijay Mantri about ten heavily armed militants fired in the air during the prize distribution ceremony and all the people who were there to witness the football match fled helter-skelter when the militants fired in the air many of them sustained injury as they fell down.
Marak who was distributing the prizes also fled along with the crowd. She told www.ohmeghalaya.com over the phone that some of the ANVC (B) militants chased her and caught her by the hands. She said, “ As I was running, one of the militants caught me by my hand and threaten to kill me.”
Marak claimed to have told the militants not to harm the people. She said the militants asked her why she was hold a public meeting without the permission of the ANVC (B). Narrating the incident she said, “ I told them that it was not a public meeting but the final of the Working President Football Tournament and I have been invited to give away the prizes.”
Marak said that the militants were inquiring from her who were the Block Congress Committee (BCC) president and general secretary. She informed, “ I did not tell them who were the president and secretary as I did not want them to be hurt.”
Marak informed that she must escaped a bullet as she had luckily fallen down. She said, “ They were not only firing in the air, but was also shooting straight luckily I fell down.” She was also of the opinion that because she did not bring her security along with her for the prize distribution ceremony, bloodshed has been avoided.
Marak said, “ Had I brought security there would have been exchange of gun fires and somebody would have been killed.” She informed that she has sustained injuries on her knees when she felt down that needs an immediate medical attention.
