SHILLONG/JOWAI, DEC 26: Workers and supporters of the opposition Congress from five villages in West Jaintia Hills District have decided to quit the party as a mark of protest against its recent decision to allot ticket to a former BJP member from Barato-Mukroh for the forthcoming elections to the JHADC.
These party workers who are mostly from Barato, Mukroh, Tamu, Pdein-Iawmusiang and Rienkyrtein have also alleged that the party had failed to respect the decision taken in a meeting which agreed to conduct a survey and to have consultation with the supporters before giving the ticket to any candidate.
“We have decided not to support the Congress in the upcoming election as a mark of protesting against its decision to allot the party ticket without taking us into consideration,” Miches Muskut from Barato village told reporters on Wednesday.
He said due to this, the supporters especially those enrolled as executive members of the party from the five villages include Barato, Mukroh, Tamu, Pdein-Iawmusiang and Rienkyrtein have decided to resign from the party.
Aiborlang Shadap who will be contesting from Barato-Mukroh constituency is one among the 7 candidates declared by the Congress in its first list released on December 21.
However, Miches alleged that the party had allotted the ticket to Aiborlang, who was a former member of the BJP without any consultation with the supporters adding there has been no meeting convened by the Mookaiaw Block Congress Committee (MBCC) on the matter.
“In a meeting held recently it was agreed that the decision on the matter (ticket) should be taken only after a survey and consultation with the party workers and supporters. However, we were surprised to know from people supporting other parties that the Congress had given the ticket to him (Aiborlang),” he said.
It was also informed that Pynskhembor Dkhar, a leader of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) was also one among the party ticket aspirants from the constituency.
Asked, Polis Shadap said it was a rude shock to the supporters because the party has decided to project a person who is not even a Congress worker and failed to respect those who have worked so hard to promote the party in the constituency during the last Assembly polls.
According to him, this will affect the Congress in the upcoming election.
The party workers also said that they had contacted the District Congress Committee (DCC) president Andrew Shullai, who is also the sitting MDC from Jowai Central, for clarification on the matter but he informed that he was also not aware of such decision taken by the party.
The elections to the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) will be held on February 27, next year.
The other candidates announced by the Congress include former Council Deputy chief executive member Awhai Andrew Shullai from Jowai Central, Holando Lamin – War Central and Laitsingh Shylla – Ummulong Moodymmai, former JSU president Rikut Parien – Saphai, Hermon Phawa – Mukhla-Wahiajer and Losingh Lakuna – War-East.
