SHILLONG, DEC 7: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today said the ruling Congress will have a “good birth delivery” by allowing the turncoats to leave the party ahead of the 2018 state Assembly elections.
“The natural process should be allowed to go on because when there is a labour pain, you don’t tried to retort the labour pain otherwise you will have a stillbirth,” Sangma said while reacting to a query whether there is a chance for the turncoats to come back to the Congress.
Sangma, who had earlier referred the rebel legislators of the party as turncoats, however said, “We would like the natural labour pain to be allowed and have a good birth delivery rather than a stillbirth delivery.”
Six sitting legislators of the ruling Congress are likely to leave the party to join other political parties ahead of the state elections.
These include former deputy chief minister Rowel Lyngdoh, three former ministers – Prestone Tynsong, Comingone Ymbon and Sniawbhalang Dhar, and Umroi MLA Ngaitlang Dhar, who all will be joining the National People’s Party.
The other is suspended Congress member Pynshngain N Syiem, also KHADC chief, who will soon lead the newly floated People Democratic Front (PDF).
Tynsong and Ymbon were among those few legislators who have failed to attend the first day of the winter session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, which began here on Friday.
Asked, chief minister however said the reason for MLAs not attending the ongoing session is also because most of them are in the field (their respective constituencies) as the battle lines are drawn with elections are nearing.
“In fact many of the members reach very late last night so they are all trying to review, have auditing in their constituencies which are linked to their promises made, how much they have been able to deliver, what more they can do, that is the expected activities of all the MLAs during this time as everyday is important for them,” he said.
