SHILLONG, SEPT 10: Opposition Congress today slammed the BJP-led NDA government and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi for looting the people of the country and for promoting the culture of “vengeance” and “vendetta” in the country.
It also expressed concern that the banks in the country may “collapse” with the rupee depreciating fast.
“The Prime Minister is misusing his platform. He is abusing and misusing the money of the country to tarnish the image of his opposition,” All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge North East Luizinho Faleiro told reporters here on Monday.
Faleiro, who earlier also took part in the party’s protest walk against the rise in prices of petroleum products in the country, said this culture of intolerance, culture of hatred, culture of vengeance, culture of vendetta, looks to be their (BJP) prime objective and prime agenda and development has taken the back stage.
“This is a culture of intolerance and culture of vengeance, culture of vendetta and hatred and they think that by promoting this polarisation they can rule the country forever and ever,” he said.
Asked whether the Congress would demand for an inquiry into the alleged collusion between BJP government and the oil companies, Faleiro, while refusing to give a direct reply only said, “They (BJP) are celebrating the pain, the agony and the misery of the people this country.”
Stating that the Congress will fight against the loot, he said, “There are robbers who rob officially and they landed in jail but here the BJP has looted the people of Rs 11 lakh crore which led to the sharp increase in the prices of petroleum products.”
The Congress leader also questioned the NDA government’s decision to export petrol to foreign countries at a much cheaper rate considering that the prices for fuel in the country has sky-rocketed and termed it as one of the highest in the world.
Accusing the BJP of spending so much money on adverstisements at a time when the country is finding it very difficult economically, he said there is total economic melt down in this country adding even the banks may have to close down with the collapse of the rupee.
“We don’t know when the banks are closing down because the rupee has collapsed, it is a frightening situation. It’s also a shame neighbouring countries like Nepal and Bhutan their currency looks stronger than our currency,” he said.
Stating that under the Narendra Modi Government there are “only worries and worries”, Faleiro said they say “ache din (good days)” will come but we are seeing that unemployment is also growing.
Asked, the AICC leader said, “I don’t know what is happening in the BJP government but we will agitate and we will take up issues that are affecting the people because petroleum products not only affect vehicles but day to day life.”
Whether the Congress would accept if the government consider bringing petroleum product under GST, he however said that party would see whether it helps and to what extend it lower the burden on the consumers and accordingly take a decision.
Earlier, Opposition leader and former chief minister Mukul Sangma said that along with the rest of the country, the party too is demonstrating against the “anti-people agenda” of the BJP-led NDA government at the centre.
“We are standing behind the people to throw away this government,” Sangma said while stating that party would continue to protest till the Centre rolls back the prices of petroleum products which include petrol, diesel and LPG.
The protest walk which was taken out from Khyndailad to Congress Bhavan was also participated by MPCC chief Celestine Lyngdoh, working president and Shillong MP Vincent H Pala, MLAs, MDCs and other party leaders and workers.
The Congress had to resort to protest walk today as declaring bandhs, disrupting normal life of the state, have been banned by the Meghalaya High Court.
The High Court had in 2015 said that bandh infringes the fundamental rights of the citizens and held the sponsors calling bandh for damages caused thereby.
