SHILLONG, FEB 1: The Congress in Meghalaya today decided to revamp and strengthen the party ahead of the upcoming bye-elections to the two autonomous district councils and also preparing for the state legislative assembly elections to be held in 2018.

The decision was taken at a meeting convened by the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) held on Monday.

Shillong Lok Sabha MP Vincent Pala, Home Minister Roshan Warjri, Forest Minister Prestone Tynsong, besides party leaders and workers attended the meeting.

“We have decided to strengthen the performance of the party since the bye-election is ahead besides preparing for the upcoming 2018 Assembly elections in the state,” MPCC chief DD Lapang told reporters after the meeting.

He informed the meeting was held just after major reshuffling of the office bearers view to revamp and strengthen the party right from the higher level down to the grass root level.

“All the office bearers and units of the party have been urged to work very hard so that the bye elections will be successful from the party side,” Lapang said.

According to him, the MPCC was also instructed to revamp and restructure all the branch committees to see no non-functional instances are there anywhere.

Stating that vital issues were also discussed during the meeting, Lapang said, “We have emphasized the need to bridge the gap of proper understanding and working together between the party and the state government.”

Meanwhile, Lapang also informed that the meeting has further decided to request the All India Congress Committee (AICC) to reconstitute and restructure the coordination committee which will link up between the government, the party and the people at large.

He said this is needed because as of now, there are only six members in the coordination committee, which include three members from the state government and three from the party. However, the committee had not included non-MLAs which may have more points of grievances to ventilate, he added.

“Therefore, we have decided to request the need for proper involvement of non-MLAs, senior and leading party members should be involved in the coordination committee,” he said.

During the meeting, the MPCC has also discussed on the matter related to performance of the NREGS and full detail reports received from the state government.

“This report will be given to the AICC in a meeting on February 5, in which the MPCC convention will be held,” Lapang said while informing that party also decided to bring out publications in Khasi and Garo language  to inform the people about success and performance of the government.-By Our Reporter
