SHILLONG, APR 4: With the Congress ruled states – Assam and Meghalaya having the least Aadhar enrollment, the BJP alleged that this reflects that the Congress is not keen to work for the welfare of the poor.
“I was surprised to see reports stating that the two Congress ruled states of the north east have the poorest Aadhar card penetration – Meghalaya with only 3.2% and Assam at 2.8%,” BJP national spokesperson Nalin Kolin told reporters.
He said Assam has a government for 15 years of the Congress party and Meghalaya for almost 10 years.
Kolin, who is also the in-charge of Meghalaya, wondered as to why the Aadhar scheme was not taken up by these two states even as it was the Congress who introduced the bill in Parliament.
Stating that BJP led centre government had only improve the scheme to ensure the poor gets the benefit, he however said, “This only shows whether it is the government of Mukul Sangma or Tarun Gogoi, the Congress talks about the poor but it doesn’t like to work for the poor.”
“However, the BJP and our Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has come from the poor, talks for the poor, plans for the poor, does and implements for the poor… that is the mood in the country,” he added.
According to him, Aadhar card, which is not a citizen card, has nothing to do with citizenship rights but it is by and large to ensure the subsidy meant for the poorest of the poor is deliver direct into their accounts.
In the case of Meghalaya, one of the main stumbling block in the enrollment of Aadhar scheme is the alleged superstitious believe that the Aadhar number is related to number of the beast (666).
Another common hurdle faced by the two states – Assam and Meghalaya is the apprehension that illegal immigrants may get to claim citizenship right through Aadhar enrolment.
Reacting to this, the BJP national leader accused the Congress ‘vote bank-politics’ which has severely damaged the unique identity of the North East.
“The BJP charges that Congress governments in the North East have made it a system to ensure illegal immigrants gets to settle down here at the cost of the indigenous people and at the cost of the unique biodiversity of the NE,” he said.
According to him, otherwise how do they (illegal immigrants) get to illegally avail false documents like passports, license and ration cards?
Stating there has been no BJP government in Assam and Meghalaya, Kohli said, “The question is why has these two states got so many illegal immigration… why they are not preventing it because law and order is a state subject and why they are not working with the centre to stop it.”-By Our Reporter
