SHILLONG, JULY 8: Newly appointed Meghalaya governor Krishan Kant Paul underscored the need for peace to ensure all kinds of development and reminded that it is the duty of the government to build a conducive society by giving supreme priority to the interest of the poor.
Paul was administered the oath of office of the Meghalaya governor by the Meghalaya high court chief justice T Meena Kumari at the Raj Bhavan on Monday. He succeeded RS Mooshahary whose term as the Meghalaya governor was over.
Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma, his cabinet colleagues, high government and police officers were present during the swearing in ceremony of Paul as the new state governor.
In his brief speech after he was sworn in as governor, Paul said, “Poor man’s interest should be the supreme priority of the government and development should not be exclusive.”
Paul stressed that development should be inclusive and it should benefit all sections of society. He “emphasized on the importance of science and technology in building the society and said that the dynamics of society should be energised by this.
Vowing to uphold democracy Paul, who is the former Delhi police commissioner, said that he was committed to deliver justice and work with the government for the interest of the people of the State.
He also complimented on the natural beauty and the rich culture and tradition of Meghalaya.
Stressing on the need to preserve the environment, Paul also said that though development is in progress, investment and development should be balanced so that it does not disturb man and nature
Welcoming the new state governor earlier chief minister Mukul Sangma assured the government’s support and cooperation. He said, “We are looking forward for your guidance and support and together we can bring the state to the highest level.”
Besides being the Delhi police commissioner Paul has also served in the Intelligence Bureau and the Research and Analysis Wing, led the police investigation that linked former South African skipper Hansie Cronje to the match-fixing scandal. Paul was also Member of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) from July 26, 2007.
His wife, Amita Paul, who is Secretary to President Pranab Mukherjee was also present at the swearing in ceremony.- By Our Reporter
