TURA, MAR 31: Rongreng Baija managing committee filed a complaint against rampant felling of trees to the Range Officer, Rongrenggre Reserve Forest, Williamnagar in East Garo Hills. Sixty percent of the Baija reserve forest in Williamnagar town has been denuded by timber smugglers.
A member of the committee Taison D Shira said, “Trucks loaded with timbers are transported out of the town on a daily basis but nobody cares”. He pointed out that the timbers are sold to neigbouring town of Assam, especially in Goalpara.
“We have taken up the issue several times but no action has been taken by the department”, he said.
In his letter to the department Shira said the people of the locality are expressing unhappiness over the rampant felling of trees. The letter said, “For some the illegal cutting of trees is a means of survival but we should not forget that if this continues, we will bring in permanent destruction to our environment.”- By Our Correspondent
