CoMSO urges Meghalaya govt to free detained NGO leaders

SHILLONG, MAR 18: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) has asked the state government to halt arrests and release NGO leaders recently detained in West Garo Hills, warning that custodial action risks escalating unrest in the region.

In a statement on Wednesday, vice‑chairman Sambormi Lyngdoh said the confederation expressed its deep concern over the prevailing situation in Garo Hills, which continues to remain tense and fragile.

“At a time when calm and stability must be the priority, the recent actions of the state government, particularly the arrest of NGO leaders, have only contributed to further uncertainty and unrest on the ground,” he said adding “CoMSO firmly believes that civil society organisations play a crucial role in representing the voice and concerns of the people. The arrest of NGO leaders, instead of fostering peace, risks escalating tensions and creating an atmosphere of mistrust between the government and the public. Such measures send a wrong signal and may undermine ongoing efforts to restore normalcy in the region.”

“We therefore strongly urge the State Government to immediately adopt a more constructive and sensitive approach by halting further arrests and prioritising dialogue and engagement with all stakeholders. Peace cannot be imposed through force; it must be built through understanding, respect, and cooperation,” Lyngdoh added further.

CoMSO also called upon the government to take urgent steps to de-escalate the situation, ensure the release of those detained in the interest of maintaining public confidence, and work collectively with civil society leaders to restore peace and harmony in Garo Hills.

The organisation reiterates its commitment to stand with the people and to support all genuine efforts aimed at ensuring justice, stability, and lasting peace in the region.
