SHILLONG, APR 22: Non Congress political parties on Wednesday told BJP national president Amit Shah about militancy problem, boundary disputes, illegal immigration and NGT ban on coal mining in Meghalaya..
Shah had convened separate meetings with UDP, HSPDP, KHNAM and NPP.
On the law and order front, all of them sought immediate centre’s intervention..
UDP president Donkupar Roy told Shah that misrule and corruption have given rise to militancy and other forms of law and order situations, with the frustrated youths venting out their frustrations, anger and reactions in forms counterproductive to the overall development of the state.
Roy also said that there have been serious allegations of the politico-militant nexus in Garo Hills and a charge sheet to this effect had been hand delivered to the President of India. According to him, unless some effective, concrete and amenable approach is worked out from the Centre, this menace will jeopardize the future of the country.
Echoing similar views, the KHNAM said that the law and order situation has been deteriorating under the Congress led government with increasing violence in the Garo Hills region. “Many policemen and civilians have lost their lives during attacks by militants,” the party said.
The issue of boundary disputes was also link to influx by the political parties.
The UDP accused that the protracted boundary disputes of the state is another clear example of the Congress party’s avid agenda of increasing its vote bank politics at the cost of illegal immigration.
UDP further informed that the presently the government has been adopting measures through the election department, in the garb of enrolment of voters, by posting officers that are not sensitive to the demographics of the state, who have been found to be encouraging immigrants along the border areas to enroll in the voters list and that has resulted in incidents of communal disharmony which could be the genesis of another major law and order problem in the state.
On the other hand, KHNAM said that the disputed areas along the inter-state border with Assam have become safe havens to the illegal immigrants adding the state government and the then UPA government has failed to come up with any tangible solution in the last 40 years.
The party sought centre’s intervention to constitute a boundary commission at the earliest for a long lasting solution.
Expressing concern on influx issue, HSPDP has reiterated its demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state.
“We still stick to our demand for implementation of the ILP in the state so that we can have a regulation in the state,” HSPDP leader Ardent Basaiawmoit told reporters after the meeting.
Stating that the ban on coal mining by the NGT has had repercussions in the economy of the state, the UDP said, “The absence of National Resource Management Policy and the lack of political will to use these resources for the benefit of the state is a glaring example of gross misrule for furthering corrupt practices in the state.”- By Our Reporter
