SHILLONG, MAY 30: The inordinate delay by the Meghalaya government to release the compensation for the acquisition of lands for expanding the Shillong airport at Umroi in Ri- Bhoi district has not only affected the land owners but also the Umden Mission school whose land the government had acquired but failed to release the compensation without which the school authority cannot build a new school building.
The delay has irked both the affected landowners and the Seng Samla Umden Pyllun which is managing the school. The organization president G Pyrtuh said, “Because the government has not release the compensation we cannot shift the school to other location.” The school was established in 2004 and caters to the educational needs of the children of the area.
Peeved at the delay, the dorbar shnong of Umden Mission has shot a letter to Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma demanding that the government pay the compensation at the earliest to the aggrieved land owners and the school.
“We urged the government to pay the compensation at the earliest, ” said the village headman D Nongdhar in the letter submitted on Thursday. He said the inordinate delay to release the compensation has put a financial strain on the landowners whose land and buildings the government acquired and also the school. He informed this has created problem to the affected villagers and the school.
Nongdhar also asked the government to ensure that the airport expansion project does not affect the village road (PWD) which is running along the three sides of the airport . He said, “The dorbar shnong urged the government to ensure that there is no encroachment to the road in the interest of the villagers of the area.”
The Seng Samla Umden Pyllun, who manages the secondary school, also said the failure of the government to clear the much expected compensation has further affected the secondary school run by the organization.
