Shillong, Feb 6: As the fallout of the killing of Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Taniam in Delhi, a six members committee headed by retired IAS officer MB Bezbaruah, who is also a member of the North Eastern Council (NEC), has been constituted by the union government to examine the causes behind the attacks/violence and discrimination against the north east people living in Delhi.
The committee has been asked to submit a report within two months on the basis of which remedial measures will be drawn up to stop the discrimination against people of north east staying in Delhi.
The committee also has the deputy secretary in ministry of home affairs S Saha as member secretary, former Meghalaya chief secretary HWT Syeim, Allen Temshi Jamir, Tape Bagra and P Bharat Singh as the members.
Joint Commissioner of Delhi police Robin Hibu, who hails from north eastern region, will also be in the team of the ministry of home affairs and assist the committee.
The chairman of the committee will co-opt members, one each from the other northeastern states as well as one lay member.
MHA’s Northeast Division deputy secretary Ajay Kanoujia said in an order issued on Wednesday evening, “It has been decided to constitute a committee to look into various kinds of concerns of the persons hailing from the northeast, who are living in different parts of the country, especially metropolitan areas, and suggest suitable remedial measures, which could be taken by the government,”.
Nineteen years old Taniam had succumbed to injuries after he was beaten by some shopkeepers in Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi after he protested to the taunting of the shopkeepers over the colour of his hair. The killing of the north east student had outraged the entire north eastern states reminding of the harassment the people of the region had to undergo in the country’s capital just because they look different from others staying in “mainland India.”
The incident had also led to a demand from North East MPs Forum with its vice president and Shillong Lok Sabha MP Vincent Pala writing to his party bosses to “proactively consider” doing something concrete to ensure security to people of the northeast, particularly of the student community, staying in the country’s capital.
It is learnt that AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi had also held consultation on Thursday with union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and MPs of north eastern states on the steps to be taken to end such harassment of the north eastern people.- By Our Reporter
