SHILLONG, JAN 20: Meghalaya labour minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that one of the bottlenecks in government monitoring the safety level of the coal mines in Jaintia hills is because the coal pits are private properties and not nationalised where the safety measures can be imposed strictly.
She, however, said the government is doing what it can to ensure that safety measures in coal mines are followed to stop increasing accidents that have killed many coal labourers last year.
Only in December last year as many as eleven coalminers in East Jaintia hills were killed in accidents because of lack of any safety measures.
Lyngdoh also said that the deputy commissioner and SP also finds it very difficult to identify the miners who dies in coal mishaps. She informed that the department is working out a mechanism which can help in the identification of labourers and their antecedents.
Lyngdoh also said that the labour department are continuously keeping a tab and conducting surprise raids in coal mines to put in safety measures in the coal mines that have claimed several lives.- By Our Reporter
