CNI centenary celebration

SHILLONG, JAN 10: Over 2000 delegates drawn from across the north eastern region will converge in the more than 130 year old All Saint Cathedral located at the heart of the city to celebrate the centenary celebration of Diocese of North East India of the Church of North India (CNI).

The two-day centenary celebration will begin on January, the church Bishop Rev Dr P Lyngdoh told reporters on Friday. He informed that over 2000 delegates including from the different sister churches in the north east are expected to participate in the celebration.

On Saturday, the head of the CNI, Most Rev Dr PP Marandih will unveil the centenary monolith erected in the church’s premises to mark the opening of the celebration.

“We also plant what we called a ‘centenary tree’ on Sunday,” Rev Lyngdoh said. Besides church leaders from different denomination and other faith communities have also been invited to the celebration, he added.

The theme for the celebration is ‘100 years journey with Christ”, the Bishop informed and said there will also be variety of programmes scheduled throughout the year which will be taken at different levels of churches across the region.

The CNI was established during the British regime in 1877 and is also the oldest church in Meghalaya and north east region. The church was destroyed by the major earthquake that took place in the year 1897 and was later rebuilt in 1902.- By Our Reporter
