SHILLONG, APR 21: The Congress will be fielding Meghalaya’s chief minister Mukul Sangma’s wife Dikanchi D Shira as its candidate for the upcoming bye-election to the Tura Lok Sabha seat slated to be held on May 16.
The decision to field Shira was taken at a meeting convened by the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president DD Lapang on Thursday evening.
The meeting was attended by the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, MPCC working president Deborah Marak, ministers, MLAs, besides senior party leaders. “The party has decided to field Shira as the candidate for the upcoming by-polls,” party sources said.
Shira is one among the five women legislators in the present Congress led Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA-II) government.
She was elected for the first time as legislator from Mahendraganj constituency during the 2013 state elections.
Earlier today, the chief minister had informed that the party would immediately inform the Congress high command on the candidate for its approval.
Meanwhile, the National People’s Party (NPP) is all set to declare its official candidate for the bye-election in a meeting to be held at Tura, West Garo Hills District tomorrow.- By Our Reporter
