SHILLONG, SEPT 16: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Friday said the government had never said that the proposed project at Polo will be called “Time Square”. “The state government has never said that it (project) will be called as Time Square,” Sangma said while referring to the question posed by the opposition which read as “status of Times Square at Polo” during the assembly session.
Sangma added, “My daughter asked me why should it be called Time Square, I told her how do I make my media friends understand that we are going to construct something like Time Square but it doesn’t have to be called Time Square.”
His clarification also after UDP MLA Jemino Mawthoh wanted to know whether any agreement was being entered into with the six owners at the triangular junction, Polo for shifting them to the Time Square.
Earlier in his reply, Urban Affairs Minister Ronnie V Lyngdoh informed that the area development plan in Polo involving Polo municipal market area, parts of Wahumkhrah front and adjoining area is under consideration.
He informed that apart from redeveloping the Polo market, the government is also proposing to have flyover, shopping mall and children/senior citizens’ park in the area.
To a query posed by NPP MLA James K Sangma on the status of DPR, the minister informed that it is yet to be prepared since the earlier proposal was only for redevelopment of Polo market.
On the total area for implementation of the proposed project, Lyngdoh said that a committee has been formed to look into the land acquisition process as there are lands belonging to MeECL, CRPF camp and Urban Bank which the government proposes to acquire.-By Our Reporter
