Shillong, August 17: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma said that the present trend in north east and other parts of the country palpitating with communal overtones is a cause of concern and everybody who upholds the integrity of the nation must fight the inimical forces trying to destroy the secular fabric of India.
Speaking at the national integration day function on Friday, which was preponed to Friday as Sunday is a holiday, and to coincides with the birthday of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Sangma made an indirect reference to the current communal clash that is going on in Assam and its repercussion on students of North Eastern region in Pune and Karnataka and called upon everyone to share the responsibility of defeating anti-national forces.
Sangma said, “People must share the responsibility with the government to defeat the anti-national elements who wants to destroy the integrity of our country. He said it is appropriate that the national integration day was preponed to coincide on the birth anniversary of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi as he has contributed a lot for peace and harmony of the country.
The national integration day or the Sadhavana Day was observed in the premises of the main state secretariat and top bureaucrats led by the chief secretary WMS Pariat were also present on the occasion.
Even as Pariat said that the need of the hour is to ensure national integration and communal harmony, he warned the people that they should not fall prey to rumours that are deliberately circulated of the threat that the north east students studying in Bangalore are being attacked. He said, “The rumours are unfounded.” He appealed to the people saying that the “need of the hour is communal harmony to curb such tendency of fomenting trouble.”
Sangma, along with others, read the pledge for “working towards emotional oneness and harmony of all the people of India, regardless of caste, region, religion or language, to resolve all differences among us through dialogue and constitutional means without resorting to violence.” – By Our Reporter
