SHILLONG, OCT 15: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma on Wednesday submitted a memorandum on flood disaster in Meghalaya to the union home minister Rajnath Singh urging him to extend financial assistance for repair, restoration of properties and infrastructure damaged by September flash floods and landslide in Garo hills region.

Sangma handed the memorandum to Rajnath Singh during a meeting between the two at New Delhi on Wednesday.

Meghalaya  government sought the centre’s assistance to the tune of Rs 1552 crore to help the state recover from the recent damages caused by the massive flashfloods and landslides in Garo hills region,

According to the government, flashfloods and landslides damaged about Rs 1550 crore worth of properties including livestock, roads, bridges and agricultural produce.

1659 villages in the state were affected by the floods and landslides and over 10, 000 houses are reported to be damaged, it said.  About 16, 000 hectared o cropped area is reported to be damaged and about 8200 hectares of agricultural land needs to be de-silted.

The government also informed that the state has also requested financial assistance of Rs 422 crore from the National Disaster Relief Fund.

In addition, the state also requested Rs 1100 crore as Special Financial Assistance for permanent restoration of critical infrastructure, the government said.- By Our Reporter
