SHILLONG, FEB 9: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Thursday said that the state government is coming up with initiatives to ensure everyone has access to quality higher education in the state.

Sangma said this during a meeting with a delegation of the Ri Bhoi Students Union (RBSU), which demanded the state government set up a government college to cater to the educational needs of the students.

Addressing newsmen, Sangma said, “I have sent them with great hope. We will be coming up with number of initiatives and since budget session is forthcoming next month, I have shared with them that we will meet again.”

“By then they will know the measures the government is putting in place to take care of our children with regards to access of quality higher education,” he added.

He said the government’s job is to engage itself in exhaustive manner and look at disparities and accordingly find ways and means to address them.

In a memorandum submitted to the chief minister, the RBSU has urged the state government to set up a government college in and around Umroi area and Ri Bhoi District at the earliest.

The union said that the proposed college is expected to cater to the educational needs of around 500 villages including Umsning, Umroi and Mawhati.

The demand came after grievances by the students especially from rural areas because of absence of adequate number of colleges in the district.
