SHILLONG, MAR 11: The state government on Friday asked the proscribed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) to demonstrate sincerity if they want to engage in peace-talks.
“If they are sincere and love the people what is the problem for them to refrain from anti-national and criminal activities. Ego should not come in the way,” Sangma said in his reply to the debate on governor’s address on Friday.
Stating the state government had written to the centre on the matter, he however said, “In fact a negative letter came from the centre. It had maintained that the outfits will have to refrain from anti-national and all unlawful activities, if they want to engage in dialogue.”
He also informed that the HNLC was put under the category of a banned organization because of its anti-national stand boycotting Independence and Republic Day celebrations.
“Therefore, we would like to wait for them (GNLA & HNLC). Let them say they will refrain from all anti-national activities and criminal activities,” Sangma announced.
Stating the approach of the state government should not be seen as ‘shaky’, the CM said, “The might of the state should not be seen as weak otherwise it will only create precedence.”
Meanwhile, the chief minister has also clarified that the state government is not the appointing authority for interlocutors for terrorist and banned militant outfits.
“The process is at the level of the centre in as far as appointment of interlocutors is concerned,” he said while stating that the government is not adopting any double standard approach on the matter.- By Our Reporter
