SHILLONG, NOV 26: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma asserted his earlier stand that he will not be calling the agitating ngos for talks if they want to discuss only on the Inner Line Permit (ILP) issue.
Sangma also said there was no deadlock in the state.
Sangma told reporters at the sideline of the Finance Commission meeting on Tuesday, “There will be no discussion on ILP.” He said if they (pressure groups) say nothing else except ILP, what more can the government wants to talk… the government does not want to talk on ILP.
Sangma said that the government had discussed applicability and effectiveness of all the mechanisms so that that it could come up with a comprehensive mechanism to address influx. He blamed the pro-Inner Line Permit groups for being ‘adamant’ in their demand for implementation of the ILP and the 12 week-long standoff that resulted in losing the lives of two people and loss of several crore to the state.
Saying that the government had been receptive for talks, Sangma said, “How many times had the chief minister have had discussions with them in preceding years.” He rued that they (ngos) come with a close mind..
Sangma said that if the ngos want to talk, the public consultation is on and let them give their views and opinions there.
Sangma also said that the common people have been suffering for so many years because of this attitude (receptive) of state government. He said they (common people) suffers because of the way in which the government allow the pressure groups to act in a manner which disregards the law and infringed upon the rights of the people. – By Our Reporter
