Sangma, NSAB chief discuss need for better policing to control militancy.

Shillong, Nov 19 : National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) chairman Naresh Chandra discussed with Meghalaya chief minister the need to check the inflow of arms from across the border to the militants based in Meghalaya, better policing and  international border management to control militancy in Garo hills district and also influx.

Emerging from a meeting Monday evening with Sangma, Chandra, who is a former cabinet secretary, said that though the discussion was brief, but he had discussed about these needs and also other developmental issue. He said, “I discussed with the chief minister on what more can be done for the development of the state, security and communication.”

Chandra, who is in Shillong leading the NSAB members for a two days meeting, met officials of all the north eastern states  at a meeting in Pinewood Hotel as part of the brainstorming exercise to get inputs about key issues relating to development, peace, security and people’s aspirations. On Tuesday the NSAB members will also be meeting a select group of academicians, community leaders, student leaders and other eminent citizens

Even as Chandra informed that the NSAB is just an advisory body to the union government giving suggestion on different security issues, he nonetheless said that the border management was important for controlling illegal influx and also stop  the smuggling of arms to the insurgent outfits in the region from across the international border.

Speaking about the need of sealing the porous international border in the north eastern region, Chandra said, “Sealing of the border must be done intelligently, the people to people contact should not be affected.”

NSAB will also discuss and get feedback on the feeling of the people on the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA). The NSAB team will also study and discuss whether the act is “repressive law or a necessity to contain militancy.” Speaking about the act, which many in the north east feels is repressive Chandra said, “As of now we are collecting the feelings of the people.”  – By Our Reporter
