CM gives certificates to 60 NIFT graduates

SHILLONG, MAY 26: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma handed out degree certificates to 60 students who passed out from National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) at a grand annual convocation for the class of 2015 held at its Shillong Campus at Lawmali on Tuesday.

The degrees were conferred to the students in three categories namely, Master of Fashion Management, Bachelor of Accessory Design and Bachelor of Fashion Design. Special awards were also conferred to selected students in categories like NIFT Best Academic Performance Award, NIFT Extraordinary Service Award and NIFT Student of the Year Award on the occasion.

Speaking during the ceremony, Sangma congratulated the degree recipients and lauded them for being bold and ambitious enough to have taken this alternative career option “which requires bringing out the best of their creative minds”.

Speaking about the huge business opportunities in textiles and fashion industry, Sangma said, “This is one sector which is connected to hundreds and thousands of people as the vibrant culture of this region is linked to this sector”.

Informing that there are 32000 families having skilled workforce registered in Sericulture & Weaving sector, Sangma said that if these young graduates from NIFT connect with these 32000 skilled workforces they would have effective readymade partners and would be able to create that value chain for them.

Sangma also stressed the need for the young graduates to remain connected to their roots, urging upon them to remain connected to people who have molded and shaped their career. “The much talked about story of India’s growth is because of the strength of people like you around”, he said and encouraged the degree recipients of NIFT to go out and prove that “they can conquer the world by unleashing their talents and make the nation proud”.

Later Sangma also administered the oath to the graduating students.

Earlier, NIFT Director-incharge Rikse R. Marak gave a brief academic report of the Institute, while Asst. Prof. MFM Department, Arnab Banerjee and Deputy Director (F&A) Mrinal Sajwan also spoke on the occasion.- By Our Reporter
